The Kennet Perfection

The Kennett Perfection is a classic rod originally built by B. James and Sons.

At 11' 4'' comprising of two sections of hand planed built cane and a separate cork handle section built on an alloy tube.

With its fine tip section and through action this rod will be a delight to use trotting on rivers and streams for species such as Roach, Dace, Chub and Perch.

It is also equally at home on still waters and would be especially good for Crucians and small Tench.

This rod has been whipped in bottle green silk and furnished with close whipped intermediates in a fine green silk.  The ferrules are hand made brass suction ferrules and the butt and tip rings are agate lined with stand off chrome intermediate rings.

For those who follow my Facebook page, you will have seen a step by step guide of the construction of this rod from the raw culm to the finished rod.

RBurns The Arrow

The Arrow is a rod of my own design intended for use for trotting on small rivers such as my local River Arrow from where it gets it name.

Usually built as a 10ft 2 piece rod this example has been configured as a 2 piece plus handle rod to aid easier transportation and storage.

Weighing in at just 11oz this is a very lightweight hollow built rod. It is ideal for handling all day whilst roving on your favourite river.

The Arrow features a fine tip section to aid float control and fast striking of the bites whilst the hollow built mid section adds stiffness resulting in a crisp action rod with a fine tip making it ideal for trotting for silver fish whilst having the backbone to deal with the occasional larger fish.

This rod features agate lined tip and butt ring, hard chrome intermediates whipped in kingfisher blue tipped in red.

Comes complete with handmade ferrule stoppers and rod bag.

Offered at the reduced price of £500 due to being used once by myself on its namesake, The River Arrow.

Avon Perfection

Here is a replica of one of my favourite B. James and Sons rods.

Although the version with the whole cane butt section is generally more desirable, of the dozen or so that I have restored my favourite by far, was this version with a built cane butt section.

This rod is a direct replica of that one including the particularly dark flamed cane.

This rod features  agate butt and tip rings, high bells stand off rings, handmade reinforced suction ferrules and is whipped in wine with fine silk including intermediate whippings.

RBurns Carpstrike

I decided to build this rod as traditionally as I could.

First the cane was flamed over an open flame, before being hand split and planed. The sections were then baked in an oven before planing to final tapers and being glued together. I chose to splice a piece of whole cane into the handle. I feel this gives a nicer balance and feel to a rod.

A 25" cork handle was then fitted and turned. The ferrules are reinforced brass suction ferrules, hand made by myself.

I wanted to finish the rod with a classic look, so I handmade a cloudy agate butt ring and whipped the rod with claret silk tipped with mustard coloured silk, which is also used for the intermediate whippings.

I'm really pleased with how the rod had turned out, and I will certainly be making more of these.

MKIV Avon

The MKIV Avon is one of the classic rod tapers. A scaled down version of the Richard Walkers legendary MKIV Carp rod.

The Avon is hugely popular with a lot of anglers, for its versatility and lovely fish playing action. The ideal rod for Chub, Tench and Bream as well as smaller Carp and Barbel making this rod a first choice for many anglers.

I have built this rod using Richard Walkers original tapers. The Tonkin bamboo has been oven baked to give a nice crisp blank, a special feature on this blank is a hollow built section under the cork handle.

I feel this improves the balance of the rod, and provides a stiffer butt section to the rod.

The rod is finished in a classic style. The 24" cork handle features sliding aluminium reel fittings and butt cap.

The real agate butt, tip rings and chrome intermediate rings, are whipped with claret silk with close spaced intermediate whippings.

The ferrules are handmade, by myself, brass reinforced suction ferrules.

Kingfisher Avon

The kingfisher Avon 11ft, is part of the Redditch Rods series, a range of rods designed and built by myself.

This 11ft Avon rod is a very important rod to me, as well as being one of my most popular rods, it is also one of the first rods I designed from scratch back in 2012. Although by this point I had already been making rods for a number of years, this rod was one of the first where I felt I had a good understanding of the tapers and how to design a bamboo rod. Before this rod my previous attempts at designing rods had revolved around trial and error and altering existing tapers. The design of this rod gave me the confidence and ability to design rods on paper with a true understanding of how the finished rod would turn out. The design of a whole range of rods followed quickly, including the 11ft kingfisher carp, a range of three Barbel rods, the hollow built Arrow in both ten and eleven foot versions amongst others.

A quick description of this rod offered for sale follows.

The Kingfisher Avon. 11ft two piece construction with a 24" cork handle built over a spliced in section of whole cane.

The whole cane under the corks gives the rod a superb balance, and steely backbone.

This rod features a handmade green agate butt ring, low bells intermediate rings whipped in bottle green silk, with fine silk intermediate whippings. The reinforced suction ferrules have been blued and the cork handle fitted with sliding reel bands and aluminium butt cap.

The kingfisher Avon rod has been designed to have a sensitive tip, with a progressive action in the middle of the rod, with the steely backbone of the whole cane under the corks.

This rod has been designed with Chub, Tench, and Bream in mind, although it can also be put to good use for smaller Barbel and Carp in open water.

The Ryan Burns Grebe

The Grebe is one of my own designs. I originally designed this 8 ft 2 piece rod as a bit of an all rounder.

It's fine tip and fast taper butt section meant that it was ideal for float fishing or light weight ledgering for small to medium sized fish, whilst still being able to comfortably handle the inevitable Carp, which inhabit most of our still waters these days.

My initial tests with the Grebe revolved around Tench fishing on my local still waters. Float fishing sweetcorn in the margins was the main method.

Although the Tench were hard to come by, plenty of Roach, Rudd and Bream were landed, and of course the Carp. Many Carp were landed, up to around 15lb, and the rod coped admirably and continues to be a pleasure to use, in fact it often stays in the boot of the car ready for an opportunistic session.

I used it recently for an evening of Chub fishing, I felt the fine tip would make the Grebe a superb touch ledgering rod.

Again, the intended target was rather elusive but the session did result in one bite, from a Barbel weighing just over 12lb, the Grebe was not troubled in the slightest.

With the Grebe being such a success in my eyes I decided to build another, but this time, making it into a twin tip rod.

A new tip was designed with a slightly slower taper and heavier in the tip.

This extra tip is ideal when fishing for small to medium sized Carp, offering more power in the tip to middle section.

The twin tip Grebe is a hugely versatile little rod, especially suited to the roving angler on small still waters or rivers.

The Grebe is offered for sale and consists of an 8ft 2 piece hand planed split cane rod with two tips. A full cork handle with handmade aluminium sliding reel bands, nickel silver butt cap and blued brass reinforced suction ferrules. The agate tip, butt ring and chrome intermediate rings are whipped in fine green silk with intermediates and finished with many coats of varnish. Supplied with a handmade rod bag.
